New Things

new ski pants!

I’ve always wanted to try downhill skiing while at the same time being incredibly frightened of the logistics of using a lift and not running into other people or a tree. I’ve never really had the opportunity to go.

But I live less than an hour from multiple resorts now. I don’t really have an excuse to not at least try it out. If I hate it, no big deal.

The other problem has been the usual one for athletic but not small girls — clothes/equipment. Trying out something new that you may despise — you’d often prefer to just rent equipment, but it’s not always an option if you’re larger than the average person.

I’ve written about this with respect to women’s hockey equipment (NTS: you should update that page!), but it is pretty much always an issue. Skiing/snowboarding clothing is no different. On a whim I ran a quick search and found Columbia ski pants in womens sizes 1X-2X-3X at Sierra Trading Post (they will send you a coupon for 20% off your first order!). [alas, only the 3X is still available as of tonight (14 Nov 2011)]

The pants fit me fairly well, though they are large in the waist (I’m used to that). They fit well through the thigh and bum and I can move easily in them. They have vents in the inner thighs.

Now I just need to wait for the resorts to open and sign up for one of these “first-time, brand new skiiers and snowboarders” classes. Woo!
