November Wrap

Well, I didn’t manage to take as many photos as I’d like. And my posts were pretty lame. But I only missed two days and it was mostly enjoyable to write short snippets of miscellaneous stuff.

Shed is going up quickly

I can’t believe one man built our new 12×16′ shed in 5.5 hours.

Mittens and Mittens

Finished knitting a pair of mittens while wearing my flannel mitten pjs. Yay!

Sore throat, sipping tea, hoping tomorrow is a productive day.

Brains and Legs

Thought from last night’s hockey game: you can compensate for slow legs with a quick brain and you can compensate for a slow brain with a burst of speed. If both brain and legs are slow, you’re not going to have a good game.

I couldn’t see the ice last night. I’ve never had that level of tunnel vision before except for perhaps my first game. Additionally my legs were completely spent in the first period. Oof!

…and I am not going to deviate from my pre-game routine ever again.

Squishy Mitten

In between yardwork and Thanksgiving, I got a little bit of knitting done. I finished a mitten! Now to hunker down and get its mate done.

Excavating

excavating

N rented an excavator to level out a section of our yard to put a shed in. Almost done! It will be good to finally have a shed so we can move things out of the garage.

I spent three hours raking and bagging leaves yesterday. I’m still not done, but I ran out of bags!

Leeks are pretty all in a pile

Before I forget to post today in the excitement and craziness — happy thanksgiving! I am thankful for ALL THE THINGS.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I know, I’m a day early! I’m currently roasting the garlic for tomorrow’s soup, sipping a hot buttered rum, and getting ready to tidy up the house.

On Cranberries

Ye put de booze in de cranberries an' boil it all up

I have never really been a huge fan of cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense because I like cranberries a LOT.

A week or two ago I ran across this spiced cranberry sauce recipe. I think it was the spiced rum that twisted my arm. Tonight I made a batch of the spiced cranberries… in addition to a more traditional cranberry sauce. Initially I was going to make my mom’s cranberries. Her sauce has walnuts and ginger in it but everyone made a weird face about nuts in the cranberries. Instead I made a very plain “traditional” version (cranberries, sugar, orange zest, orange juice, a bit of Cointreau).

Clinging Negativity

My team won our hockey game last night, 2-1, against the team at the top of our division. We even handed them their first loss. It was a hard-fought game, fast and physical.

I have a horrible habit of clinging to the negative parts of my personal game. The drive home after the game is me replaying parts of the game in my head — usually the ones where I flubbed something up. Back when I first started playing I quickly realized it was a path to madness (or at least not enjoying playing as much). I promised myself that I had to come up with a positive part to go along with whatever negative my brain was harping on. This is also why I always take the negative of a game and turn it into a goal for the next game — no sense in feeling down about something unless you are also going to do something to change it.

Last night’s game didn’t feel good to me (with respect to my play). I couldn’t come up with any one single play I made that was positive enough to overcome the negative ones. It is odd, since it was the first win I’ve played in this season. I know I didn’t have a bad game. Maybe I expect too much. Maybe I should figure out a way to not think about it.

After all, Sunday’s another game!

Sunday is Hockey Night

Local brewery American Brewing Co. has an IPA that is hockey themed – Breakaway IPA!

local hockey beer!

I finally managed to pick up a couple of bottles. It’s good! Maybe I’ll have a bit when I get home from my game tonight.

[I also really enjoyed their Caboose Oatmeal Stout on nitro. Delicious.]
